Deep beneath the sand on a warm, tropical beach, a little sea turtle breaks out of its egg, crawls up through the sand, and emerges into the world. The ocean is just a few feet away, but numerous predators are waiting for the hatchling and its siblings to make their run to the ocean. So begins the life of a green sea turtle! In this coming-of-age introduction to these marine reptiles, readers will learn how mother turtles bury their eggs on beaches and then return to the ocean. The little hatchlings, with no parent to protect them, eventually have to leave their nests and make a danger-filled dash to the ocean. Then, these water babies must fend for themselves out at sea, finding food and avoiding enemies until they grow to become one of the largest reptiles on Earth. The colorful interior spreads and gorgeous photos of sea turtle hatchlings are sure to delight emergent readers. Sea Turtle Hatchlings is part of Bearport's Water Babies series.

K-Gr 2-The primary-grade crowd will love this early fluent reader series that discusses the infancy and development from birth to adulthood of various water animals. Physicality at each stage, diet, and social structure are addressed; predators are not mentioned in all of the volumes. Clearly labeled photographs complement the texts; words that are defined in the glossaries appear in bold in the narratives; and the glossaries include both definitions and photographs. The vocabulary is more complex than that found in many beginning-reader series, but each volume is chock full of fascinating facts. A map highlights where each animal lives. This series is a standout.

Geared to beginning readers, these adequate introductions use short sentences and engaging color photographs to present the life cycle of a loggerhead turtle and an American bullfrog from egg to adulthood. The books briefly cover diet, habitat, and growth. A small world map shows where the animals live. A few boldface vocabulary words are defined in a picture glossary. Reading list. Ind.
