The narratives in this book are of journeys made in three wildernesses—on a coastal island, in a Western mountain range, and on the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. The four men portrayed here have different relationships to their environment, and they encounter each other on mountain trails, in forests and rapids, sometimes with reserve, sometimes with friendliness, sometimes fighting hard across a philosophical divide.

Four men, four environmental philosophies, three wilderness settings. From these various and, at times, competing perspectives, author John McPhee weaves a deep debate over how to best protect the future of the planet and humanity. Grover Gardner's clear, conversational narration makes these sometimes complex discussions easy for listeners to follow. There's no false drama, but he changes the pacing occasionally to enliven the narrative. McPhee's almost lyrical descriptions of scenes in nature and his use of telling detail are ideally suited to audio. Although the book was originally published in 1980, its key points remain just as vital today. R.C.G. © AudioFile 2024, Portland, Maine
