Grades 5-8 For more than two centuries, the U.S. government, politicians, and corporations have broken treaties and taken land away from indigenous peoples. This became quite evident as Energy Transfer Partners began installing the Dakota Access Pipe Line (DAPL). Activists from indigenous groups and environmental supporters from across the country set up camp and began to protest the DAPL, particularly its path under the Missouri River, threatening fresh water access for the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. This volume in the Taking a Stand series (4 titles) cogently outlines this ongoing conflict. MacCarald's text (with plenteous white space) and accompanying color photographs provide an authentic look at the disparaging treatment the U.S. government and industry still places on indigenous peoples. Includes focus questions for students, a glossary, further research sources, and an index.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2019, American Library Association.)
