Gr 4-6-Doubly useful for combining exercises in analytical reading and logical thinking with exploration in specific fields of science, each of these titles is framed as a journal kept by a young researcher on a "mission." Each narrator interviews or is supervised by scientists or professionals who show and explain a range of phenomena and concepts from how microwaves, cell phones, and gaming systems work to differences in composition and biota in different kinds of soil. Embedded in the discussions are thought experiments, easily reproducible physical demonstrations, fact summaries, and small photos or diagrams. The volumes all end with a page of further ideas and questions to ponder.
