Self-defense or murder? In the continuation of one of Britain's most popular crime series from Cara Hunterthe author of the instant New York Times bestseller Murder in the FamilyDI Fawley returns to determine if someone has staged a crime scene in connection with another homicide from years past.

Midnight. A grisly murder scene at isolated farm on the outskirts of Oxford.

A man lies dead in the kitchen—shot point blank. The farm's elderly owners claim the shooting was self-defense against a burglar. But something about the crime scene doesn't sit right with DI Adam Fawley, whose gut tells him there's more to their story. If the victim came to rob the house, why wasn't he wearing gloves or carrying tools? Why didn't the owner of the house call the police right after the shooting? Why did his wife wash his blood splattered clothes immediately?

Digging deeper, the police realize this is no ordinary burglary gone wrong. There's an unmistakable link to an infamous case from years earlier involving a child's murder and an alleged miscarriage of justice. When the news leaks out, the press goes wild.

Suddenly Fawley's team are under tremendous pressure to crack the case—and to bring one formidable criminal to justice.

If a man hadn't heard a gunshot at Gantry Manor outside Oxford, the death of a young man, who was shot in the face, might never have been reported. The story of an interrupted burglary told by the elderly Swanns just doesn't add up. It's only when DI Adam Fawley and his team recognize the Swanns that they link the couple to a 20-year-old story. Camilla Rowan was arrested five years after her baby disappeared. In a notorious case that made headlines, she was tried for his murder, although a body was never found. Camilla, known as "Milly Liar", has served 15 years, although she still insists her son is alive. What if Camilla's son was alive until he was shot by the Swanns? Fawley's investigative team digs into Camilla's story one more time in a complex case with twists until the last page. VERDICT Inspired by a real-life crime in Australia, the sixth DI Fawley novel (following The Whole Truth) is an intricate, carefully plotted police procedural comparable to the best of Ann Cleeves's Vera novels or Louise Penny's mysteries. The mixed media used in the book adds to its appeal.--Lesa Holstine

Near Oxford, DI Adam Fawley's team responds to a witness report of shots fired at a rural farmhouse. When the elderly homeowner, Richard Swann, ushers them inside, they find a grisly scene: a man has been killed with a shotgun at close range. Richard and Margaret Swann's claim that the victim broke in and attacked Richard is shaky. The knife was found in the victim's non-dominant hand. Richard Swann's clothes were washed before police arrived. Richard was seen taking out a now-missing garbage bag, and the couple never called the police. The Swanns offer only confusion and suspicious delays as the case spirals into a media storm: the Swanns turn out to be notorious true-crime celebrities. They changed their names after their daughter, Camilla, was convicted of murdering her infant son. Adding another layer of confusion, DNA identifies the victim as Camilla's allegedly murdered son. To readers' benefit, the self-defense inquiry balloons into a complex mystery, which Fawley's team unravels in staccato-paced, granular detail in a smart, compelling series best.
